As Alabama's largest airport, the facilities at Birmingham International continue to grow and expand. In order to strengthen the marketability of our airport and the Birmingham Region, we strive to maintain a first-class facility that will continue to enhance Birmingham as a great place to live, work and do business.
On July 15, 2007, the FAA commissioned the use of the newly extended runway 6/24. The 12,000 foot runway accommodates a fully loaded and fully fueled 747 cargo aircraft taking off on a nonstop overseas flight. The extended runway places Birmingham in a better position to expand air service to overseas destination and provides air cargo services to the regions growing and diverse business sector.
The Birmingham Airport has recently completed Phase II of Air Cargo expansion on the Southwest end of runway 6-24. The new Air Cargo facility adds more than 400,000 square feet to original cargo site, doubling its size and allowing enough space for up to five aircraft of various size to be parked and loading at any given time. In addition, the project included the widening of existing taxiway A to allow for the wider wing span on larger inter-continental cargo airplanes. An additional 50,000-75,000 sq. ft. storage building is planned as well as an access roadway connecting the expanded cargo area to Airport Highway. The expanded cargo area will operate in concert with the 2,000 foot extension of the East-West Runway and will allow for the growth and development of international commerce at Birmingham International.
