What would you write your essay about and depict in your poster if you were given the following topic, "Think of a career you would like to have when you grow up. Explain how you will use aviation in that career." This was the poster and essay topic given to all fifth graders within the Birmingham City School System. The grand prize for the students selected was a one-week overnight camp scholarship to Aviation Challenge at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, during the summer.

There were 14 students representing seven schools from Birmingham City Schools at Aviation Challenge. The students enjoyed six days of Mach I training and participated in activities such as; flight simulators, aviation principles and land survival skills. Space and Aviation Challenge Camp has proven to be an extraordinary program for young people that provideseducational and team-building experiences that will benefit them for years to come. The camp builds leadership and character in every child who attends.

The Space and Aviation Challenge scholarships are a result of the Birmingham Airport Authority's annual Golf for Schools event, which raises money to enrich the education of local students surrounding the airport area communities. The Birmingham Airport Authority believes that these scholarships allow students a unique chance to explore their interests in space and aviation and foster an even greater awareness of future opportunities in such fields.
