Summer Youth Work Program

The Birmingham Airport Authority's Summer Youth Program (SYP) allows high school juniors and seniors, ages 16-18, an opportunity to work during the summer. The program exposes students to the workplace and it is usually their very first job experience for many of them. The goal of the program is to empower the students to be highly motivated and productive employees who understand teamwork and the value of having a strong work ethic. The SYP is limited to a total of 30 students who must successfully complete an application and interview process. Applications for this program are accepted each year during the month of March only. The students receive an hourly pay of $8.50. The ideal student should:
  • Have an academic "B" average
  • No disciplinary issues at school
  • Reside in an airport neighborhood area community
  • Attend Huffman or Woodlawn High Schools
Students are selected and divided into two sessions during the months of June and July. Each four (4) week work session consists of:
  • Working in the maintenance department
  • Exposure to careers in the aviation industry
  • Professional development sessions: Career Planning & Personal Goal Setting
  • Financial Management Sessions
  • Resume, Interviewing, Professional Dress and Workplace skills
  • Business communication and writing skills
  • Business Etiquette Luncheon
  • Tours:
    • Civil Rights Institute
    • FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) Tower Tour
    • Museum of Southern Flight tour
    • Air & Rescue Fire Fighter Station Tour
